AMERICA'S INSTRUMENT

A fast moving eight minute interpretive exhibit which introduces ABM visitors to the colorful evolution of the banjo, most of which has taken place in the United States.  Beginning with its humble roots in American slavery in the mid 1600s, each stage of banjo development leading up to its current voice in bluegrass, folk and world music is presented.

Five banjos - each as different as the other - illustrate the evolution of the banjo from an exclusively hand made folk instrument to a marvelous melding of machine era production and artistic hand craftsmanship.

This exhibit introduces visitors to six of the most important individuals in banjo history.  From the banjo's first star, Joel Walker Sweeney in the 1840s to contemporary banjo icon Bela Fleck, each of these figures has made an indelible mark on the banjo's development and identity.

To banjo players and the general public alike, the name Gibson is synonymous with quality musical instruments.  From the story of company's namesake, Orville H. Gibson in the 1800s to modern banjo creations which represent the pinnacle of musical perfection, the Gibson story is an entertaining and enlightening look into this iconic banjo manufacturer.

In the 1920s and 30s - before television, sound film and high fidelity recording, audiences enjoyed music and entertainment as an "in person" experience.  The banjos in this exhibit - each a work of art - reflect the architectural and decorative trends of this flamboyant era.
